Price is Right for The Rays

What a game.

Last night's Game 7 that catapulted the Rays into their first World Series was one for the ages.  No story sounds better that the old "Doormat a year ago...now heading to the Fall Classic" yarn.

That said, while the game was full of great storylines, for my money the one that'll stick with us is the baptism by fire of 2007 No. 1 overall pick David Price.

Only a year removed from mowing down batters in the SEC, Price continued his dominance through every level in the minors...earning a coveted spot on the Rays' expanded roster, and now...their postseason team.

As if that wasn't enough...now manager Joe Maddon calls his number for the most important inning of the franchise's history....asking him to hold a two run lead over the defending champion Red Sox.

The Sox (or should we say comeback kids?) showed why they've won 2 World Championships in the last 4 years...fighting back from the brink of elimination 3 days previous to win Games 5 and 6, forcing the decisive Game 7.

Jon Lester and Matt Garza battled brilliantly...two great pitchers and as my wife will personally attest from covering them the last 2 years...two of the best people in the game of baseball.

But, to me, this game...this series...and ultimately the cog that will propel the Rays to win the World Series rests in David Price.  That's the kind of stratospheric performance that transforms a good young player into a great superstar in the making.

I'm not going to pretend to know what will happen come Game 1 on Wednesday on FOX (insert shameless plug here).  What I do know is Coach Maddon NOW has the closer he's been searching for.

I remember the same thing happening to a Cardinals pitching prospect 2 years ago.  Adam Wainwright had gone from promising prospect...to jilted minor league mainstay...to new life in the Cards major league bullpen in 2006.  In the postseason, injuries and ineffectiveness to Jason Isringhausen shoved Wainwright into the October spotlight.  He seized the moment, leading the Cards to an improbable run through the October nights to beat the mighty Detroit Tigers in 2006.

Now, David Price will move back to starter...probably winning a spot in next year's rotation.
But, for now, this is his Wainwright moment.  If he seizes it, he kickstart a career for the ages.

Just my two cents.

Metallica, Death Magnetic, and the Glory Days of Heavy Metal

Thankfully, with the release of Death Magnetic, Metallica has finally put an end to the debate over old Metallica and new Metallica. Death Magnetic is not only an album that sees the band return to their Metal and Trash roots as much as they possibly could over two decades removed from Kill 'Em All.

Fringe Benefits

Today, I’m creating some web banners for the work website. I’m in the process of tracking down some stuff for Fringe, the new JJ Abrams show on FOX.

While hunting for jpegs, gifs, and whatnot, we discovered a cool little marketing freebie today. One of our producers received a Fringe Promo Tool Kit a few weeks ago with the pilot on DVD and a neat little voice recorder that’s totally a JJ Abrams marketing ploy.

I could try to describe it…but it’s better to just show you.

Neat, huh? I like how they burned the leaf design right onto the recorder’s display.
Very Abrams, indeed.

BTW…I still haven’t seen the pilot yet. KO and I are catching up on other shows, but we are TiVoing the show (season pass, bitches!). So…no spoilers.

Ike Dumping Rain On Us

While I'm glad Ike has taken a good turn from Florida (esp. the Gulf Coast), we're still feeling the effects.

Rain bands are soaking the SWFL area...and driving to work was a chore.
Oh well. It's still better than driving in feet of snow back home in Missouri. I'll take this any day.

Literary Goodness

Today I bring you a small slice of genius in the internet pie of minutiae.

http://areasofmyexpertise.blogspot.com/

if you've never heard the wonders of John Hodgman's brain droppings...you're sorely lacking.

note of little importance to you: I'll be stopping at the library on my way home to pick up his old book. New book on Amazon.

Thanks to Boing Boing for this find.

Fantasy Fallout

sometimes...i really love/hate this time of year.

sure....my b-day's just around the corner...which also means my favorite season is here as well (autumn).

also...my other favorite season swings into full stride....football season.

unfortunately, it's not all good.
with the football season comes an obsession i'm none too proud of: fantasy obsession.

the players, the stats, the winning....ohhh, the winning.

it's a problem.
a problem that i always think i have under control.
sometimes...i'm not so sure.

this year...i'm in 3 leagues...one of which i'm running for the first time.

i thought i was doing well today...even to the point that i didn't watch the Chiefs play the Patriots.
KO and i attended a friend's poolside barbeque in its place.
lots of beer. lots of fun.

then...when we got back home...i decided to check the scores from the 1pm and 4pm games.
so, i'm relaying the team updates to KO while she's lying down...

then...she falls asleep...so i keep looking....and looking...and looking...

one hour later...and i'm still perusing the wires...checking the leader boards....obsessing over who i should have started and benched.

Ugh....

i really need to nip this in the bud...before i can't be saved.

anyone know if there are support groups i can contact? maybe a hotline?

my sanity may depend on it.

gotta go. maybe i can add a new WR to my.....*slap across the face*

I (Don't) Like Ike...or Josephine

Forecast Models courtesy Weather Underground.
Side Note: For a really cool site for graphic weather geeks, visit
Storm Pulse. Thx KO.

Ok...seriously...

When are these storms gonna stop? 2 years and only one tropical storm rolls through SWFL (Ernesto...for all you scoring at home). Now, it's just a congo line of atmospheric terror.

I really thought Gustav was headed our way....instead it attacked our beloved Big Easy.

Now...it's Hanna...which looks like it's making a turn...but, it's too early to tell on 9-2.

Behind that is the real scary storm...Ike.

Let's just say i don't like what the spaghetti plots are telling me for this pattern.

That said...we'll just sit and wait...and blow to the east.

Oh yeah...and just when you thought it was safe...

Hello Josephine! Ugh...
